Abstract: In this talk, I present a modern evolutionary approach to human emotions – what they are, how they achieve their evolved functions, and how they relate to other aspects of mind and behavior. These topics are illustrated with examples. I then discuss the implications that this perspective yields, highlight how it improves upon older evolutionary approaches, and ask how it may be relevant to our understanding of clinical psychology and mental health.
